Our Services

Initial Evaluation

This evaluation is offered as a stand-alone service or as the starting point of treatment. It covers a broad range of topics including drinking patterns, alcohol-related consequences, other drug use, compulsive behaviors, level of functioning, relationships, emotional/psychological issues, and motivation/readiness for change. Specific feedback and recommendations are offered and, where appropriate, treatment options are discussed.

Monitoring

This service is a starting point for clients in the “contemplation” stage who are still questioning the severity of their drinking problem and the need for change. Clients have a unique opportunity to examine their alcohol use and its consequences in real time -- without judgment or coercion -- and identify their personal reasons for wanting to change. Monitoring is especially useful for individuals who are not quite ready to engage in formal treatment.

Moderation Group

This once weekly group provides a combination of education, advice, and peer support. The goal is to help participants learn how to moderate their alcohol consumption and prevent a return to harmful drinking patterns.

Individual Sessions

Individual sessions are offered alone or in combination with participation in the moderation group. The frequency of sessions is tailored to accommodate each client’s individual needs.

Medication

Recent studies indicate that several new medications, including naltrexone (Revia), acamprosate (Campral), and topiramate (Topamax), can reduce the likelihood of heavy drinking or make it easier to maintain abstinence by offsetting changes in the brain caused by alcohol. Clients considering medication as a supplement to the treatment they receive here are referred to physicians in the area who can prescribe and monitor the appropriate medication.

Self Help

Clients are encouraged to make use of Moderation Management (MM), a unique self-help support group for people who are interested in learning how to moderate their drinking or abstain. MM has an online support group, chat rooms, face-to-face meetings at various places around the country, and many other helpful resources accessible on their website.

How to Get Started

If you are concerned about your drinking and want professional help in deciding what to do, contact us today to schedule your private consultation with Dr. Washton. What if Moderation Does Not Work for You?

After giving moderation a good try, some clients find that for whatever reason they are unable to consistently moderate their alcohol intake without lapsing back into harmful drinking patterns. Coming to this realization for themselves is one of the positive benefits of offering moderation as an option. When this happens, clients are encouraged to switch to our abstinence-based treatment services, as described on our companion website, www.recoveryoptions.us
