Self-Assessment: Take the Tests

IMPORTANT: These instruments are designed to help you evaluate your drinking patterns. They are not diagnostic tests, should not be used to make clinical decisions, and are not substitutes for evaluation by a doctor or other healthcare professional.

Signs of Problem Drinking

Signs of More Serious Drinking Problems

The signs of more serious drinking problems such as Alcohol Dependence (Alcoholism) are listed below. In general, the presence of three or more of these signs suggests the possibility of a significant alcohol problem warranting further evaluation, and possibly treatment. The more signs you have, the more serious your drinking problem is likely to be.

AUDIT

Alcohol Use Disorders Test

This test was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) to identify patterns of hazardous or harmful drinking. In general, higher scores on the AUDIT reflect a greater likelihood of hazardous or harmful drinking, greater severity of alcohol-related problems, and greater need for more treatment.

INSTRUCTIONS: Please read each question carefully. Answer every question, even if it does not apply to you. Compute your TOTAL score by adding up the points next to each of your answers. At the bottom of this page are general guidelines for interpreting your score.

1. How often do you have a drink containing alcohol?

2. How many drinks containing alcohol do you have on a typical day when you are drinking?

3. How often do you have six or more drinks on one occasion?

4. How often during the last year have you found that you were not able to stop drinking once you had started?

5. How often during the last year have you failed to do what was normally expected from you because of drinking?

6. How often during the last year have you been unable to remember what happened the night before because you had been drinking?

7. How often during the last year have you needed an alcoholic drink first thing in the morning to get yourself going after a night of heavy drinking?

8. How often during the last year have you had a feeling of guilt or remorse after drinking?

9. Have you or someone else been injured as a result of your drinking?

10. Has a relative, friend, doctor, or other healthcare professional expressed concern about your drinking or suggested you cut down?

YOUR TOTAL SCORE:

How to Interpret Your Score

0 to 7:

Scores in this range suggest that your drinking is not causing serious problems or putting you at risk of suffering serious alcohol-related problems at this time. Nonetheless, if you and/or others are concerned about your drinking and would like a professional evaluation, please contact us to schedule an appointment with Dr. Washton

8 to 15:

Scores in this range suggest that your drinking is already causing problems and likely putting you at risk of experiencing more serious alcohol-related problems if it continues at this level. You may want to consider reducing your alcohol consumption or stopping completely, preferably with help from a qualified healthcare professional. Please contact us to schedule a private consultation with Dr. Washton.

16+

Scores in this range, and particularly those above 20, suggest that you are experiencing significant alcohol-related problems and may be alcohol dependent. You would be well advised to consult with a qualified healthcare professional to discuss available treatment options. Please contact us to schedule a private consultation with Dr. Washton.
