Self-Assessment of Your Drinking: Take the Tests

IMPORTANT: These instruments are designed to help you evaluate your drinking patterns. They are not diagnostic tests, should not be used to make clinical decisions, and are not substitutes for evaluation by a doctor or other healthcare professional.

Signs of Problem Drinking (Alcohol Abuse)

  • You are becoming increasingly concerned about your drinking and starting to question your ability to control it
  • People close to you have expressed concern about your drinking
  • Your drinking causes conflict with your spouse or mate
  • You question whether you can have a “really good time” without drinking
  • You do not drink heavily on a daily basis, but are more likely to drink heavily (“binge”) on weekends, in certain social situations, with certain people, or when feeling bored, anxious, unhappy, or stressed
  • You say or do things under the influence of alcohol that you later regret
  • Your drinking is associated with other risky behaviors such as driving while intoxicated, using other drugs, and/or having sex with strangers
  • You are drinking more, but enjoying it less
  • You drink to escape problems, worries, and/or bad moods

 

Signs of More Serious Drinking Problems

The signs of more serious drinking problems such as Alcohol Dependence (Alcoholism) are listed below. In general, the presence of three or more of these signs suggests the possibility of a significant alcohol problem warranting further evaluation, and possibly treatment. The more signs you have, the more serious your drinking problem is likely to be.

  • You often drink more, or for a longer period of time than you intended to
  • You have tried repeatedly to cut down or stop drinking, but have been unable to maintain it
  • Once you start a drinking episode and especially after you’ve had at least two or three drinks, you lose the ability to predict or control at what point your drinking episode will end
  • You repeatedly put yourself in situations while drinking that increase your chances of getting hurt or hurting others
  • You need to drink much more than you once did to get the effect you want, or find that your usual number of drinks has much less effect on you than before
  • You continue to drink even though it makes you feel depressed, anxious or makes other problems worse
  • You drink to the point of experiencing a “blackout” or memory loss for what you said or did while you were intoxicated
  • You continue to drink even though it repeatedly causes problems with your family, friends, or work
  • You find that drinking or recuperating from drinking disrupts or interferes with your ability to take care of other responsibilities
  • You have given up or spent less time involved in other activities that were important or pleasurable to you in order to drink
  • You have been arrested, held at a police station, or experienced other legal problems because of your drinking
  • You experience physical withdrawal symptoms when you stop drinking or try to cut down, such as anxiety, trouble sleeping, shaking, restlessness, nausea, sweating, vomiting, etc.
  • You often drink alone
  • You drink in the morning
  • Your personality and behavior changes in a negative way when you drink
  • You crave alcohol or have a strong desire to drink at certain times of the day or evening
  • You make excuses for your drinking or do things to hide your drinking, such as buying alcohol at different stores
  • You continue to drink despite health problems that are caused or made worse by your drinking, such as liver, heart, or stomach problems.

Alcohol Use Disorders Test (AUDIT)

This test was developed by the World Health Organization (WHO) to identify patterns of hazardous or harmful drinking. In general, higher scores on the AUDIT reflect a greater likelihood of hazardous or harmful drinking, greater severity of alcohol-related problems, and greater need for more treatment.

INSTRUCTIONS: Please read each question carefully. Answer every question, even if it does not apply to you. Compute your TOTAL score by adding up the points next to each of your answers. At the bottom of this page are general guidelines for interpreting your score.

How to Interpret Your AUDIT Score

0 to 7:

Scores in this range suggest that your drinking is not causing serious problems or putting you at risk of suffering serious alcohol-related problems at this time. 8 to 15:

Scores in this range suggest that your drinking is already causing problems and likely putting you at risk of experiencing more serious alcohol-related problems if it continues at this level.
